A memorial lecture in honour of Professor Vojin Dimitrijević and the promotion of the new edition of the International Law of Human Rights textbook was held on Thursday, 17 October 2024 at Aeroklub Belgrade.
The memorial lecture, titled “The Rise of Security and the Demise of Human Rights“, was delivered by Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, Regents Professor and Robina Professor of Law, Public Policy and Society at the University of Minnesota Law School and Professor of Law at the Queens University, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Professor Ní Aoláin is the recipient of numerous academic awards and honours, including the Leverhulme Fellowship, British Academy award, a Fulbright scholarship, the Alon Prize, the Robert Schumann Scholarship, a European Commission award, and the Lawlor fellowship. She is an elected fellow of the Royal Irish Academy. She has published extensively in the fields of emergency powers, counterterrorism and human rights, conflict regulation, transitional justice and sex-based violence in times of war. Her book Law in Times of Crisis (CUP 2006) was awarded the American Society of International Law’s preeminent prize in 2007 – the Certificate of Merit for creative scholarship. Her published work has been extensively recognized for its pathbreaking contributions and its rigor.
Professor Ní Aoláin was United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism (2017 – 2023). She was elected to the International Commission of Jurists in 2023. She was appointed K.C. (Hons) in 2024 by King Charles III.
The memorial lecture at Aeroklub was followed by the promotion of the new edition of the textbook International Law of Human Rights, authored by Vojin Dimitrijević, Dragoljub Popović, Tatjana Papić, and Vesna Petrović.
With a view to preserving Vojin Dimitrijević’s academic legacy, the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights and Dosije studio published a modernised comprehensive international human rights law textbook for students of law and similar disciplines at all levels, as well as everyone engaged with human rights in theory and practice.
With this event BCHR commemorated the 12th anniversary of the passing of Vojin Dimitrijević, a law professor, public intellectual, prominent champion of human rights and democracy, and longtime Director of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights.
