Discrimination and Economic and Social Rights in Serbia

2012-2013

Donor: Royal Netherlands Embassy

The BETA News Agency and the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights are implementing the project Media – Watchdogs for Human Rights in 2012/2013, which aims to contribute to the realisation of human rights and responsible reporting on discrimination and a broad range of economic and social rights. The project focuses on two themes: Discrimination and Economic and Social Rights in Serbia.

The project will comprise media reports on the national regulations, the state of human rights in Serbia, the requisite alignment of the national regulations with European procedures and illustrate them with examples from everyday practice. The media reports will cover all the relevant developments regarding the main project topics and will be prepared by the team of News Agency BETA’s portal EurActiv.rs (www.euractiv.rs). A selection of the most relevant reports will also be put on the agency wires. Responsible and professional reports will serve as an example of ethical, impartial and professional reporting on sensitive social issues.

The project also included the implementation of two thematic workshops for Belgrade college students with a view to upgrading general and media literacy and ensuring their timely adoption of ethical and professional standards with respect to reporting on human rights.

The participants in the workshops were provided with the opportunity to work and gain professional experience for two months in EurActiv.

The implementation of the project was supported by the Royal Netherlands Embassy via the Dutch Foreign Ministry MATRA programme.
