This project is the continuation of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights’ long tradition in educational activities, which have been part of the Centre’s field of work since its inception. This year’s Human Rights School was the eightnteenth annual such school. It was aided by the Balkan Trust – The Project of the German Marshall Fund and the City of Belgrade’s Agency for Cooperation with NGOs and European Harmonization and the Belgrade Youth Office offered their premises (Info Room) for the School. The School brings together participants interested in this field, who range from law students, political science or social science students, postgraduates and NGO activists from Serbia on the one hand, and on the other, relevant experts in this field, representatives of international institutions and NGOs.The School consists of over 40 lectures, debates, moots and presentations, during a ten-day intensive course when students are given an opportunity to learn about the significance of human rights in our legal system, the international and national sources of human rights, the practice of international bodies and protection systems, the standards accepted in the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and individual rights protected by international instruments which have been ratified by Serbia. Besides this, the School is an opportunity for young people with various interests to form their own conclusions, develop their critical thinking, debate with other participants and well-known experts, develop new friendships and foster cooperation with their colleagues, and also to become part of the unique alumni network of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, which is comprised of all the former participants of the School.
