The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights in 2012-2013 successfully implemented the project entitled Promoting Responsible and Professional Reporting on the Selected Issues of Discrimination, Violence in Society, the Right to Education and Transparency of Government Decision-Making, thanks to the support of The Balkan Trust – The Project of the German Marshall Fund. The project was a follow-up of a project involving the successful training of young journalists, which was implemented in 2010/2011, also thanks to the assistance provided by The Balkan Trust – The Project of the German Marshall Fund.Twenty five young journalists, students of the Belgrade University College of Political Sciences, attended a total of 32 lectures or eight trainings in the City of Belgrade Youth Office Info Room.
The project participants produced a total of 18 articles, three TV and three radio reports, which were published/broadcast in the Belgrade daily Politika, the weekly Vreme, the Crno na belo Initiative website and on RTV 92.
The project provided all of the participants with the chance to meet and cooperate with eminent journalists, representatives of the national independent regulatory authorities and the civil society organisations in the Republic of Serbia, whilst a number of them were provided with the opportunity to begin their professional practice in the weekly Vreme.
The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights trusts that this project has helped empower and raise the capacities of young journalists to follow and report on issues regarding the improvement of human rights and development of the rule of law.
We are also of the view that the training of young people is extremely important for our society, because many of them have not had the chance to familiarise themselves with human rights topics and the concepts of tolerance and equality. We hope we will have the opportunity to cooperate with the new generations of journalists and that projects like these will not only provide them with training, but also result in the emergence of new human rights advocates and defenders in Serbia.
