Series Human Rights
The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights and the Council of Europe organised two training seminars to train Serbian legal professionals (private practicing lawyers) and judges on the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). The seminars took place in Belgrade and were attended by a total of 50 participants from various Serbian cities.The objectives of the seminar were to provide participants with an introduction to the fundamental principles and concepts of the European Convention on Human Rights, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the Council of Europe, to examine key ECHR principles and rights from the Convention as they apply to domestic legal provisions, and to familiarise participants with the application of international human rights standards in domestic law practice, with a focus on the jurisprudence of the ECtHR and its relevance for domestic trials.
International and domestic experts lectured in the seminars, which also included practical modules and moot courts. The increased knowledge of ECHR standards by domestic lawyers will allow judiciary in Serbia to have quality counsels in cases involving rights guaranteed by the ECHR.
