Human Rights Conference “Human Rights and Universality” of the Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI)

September 17, 2015

The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights will mark its 20th anniversary by being honoured to host the 2015 Human Rights Conference “Human Rights and Universality” of the Association of Human Rights Institutes (AHRI) on 21-22 September 2015. The theme has been chosen because almost 70 years after the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the legitimacy of human rights is still being questioned and human rights scepticism still abounds. However, new ways of approaching the universality of human rights are emerging.

Since 2002, the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights is member of the Association of Human Rights Institutes, a  network of 50 member institutions that carry out research and education in the field of human rights. The 50 member institutions are from 23 different countries world wide. AHRI’s objective is to bring together human rights researchers from across the disciplines, to facilitate the exchange of ideas and collaboration, and to promote research, education and discussion in the field of human rights. Furthermore AHRI is supportive of PhD Researchers and the facilitation of exchange between the different member institutions.

The public keynote address »Human Rights and Universality: a view from the global south«, will be given by Hon. Lady Justice Prof. Dr. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza, Constitutional Court of Uganda. Professor Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza has been recently appointed to the Uganda Bench as a justice of the Constitutional Court. She previously served as a faculty member and administrator at Makerere University and was the first woman to be appointed a full professor of law in East Africa. Professor Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza’s research has been published widely, including in the area of women’s rights.
