The Commissioner for the Protection of Equality filed a criminal report on hate speech on the Internet

March 10, 2018

Belgrade Center for Human Rights expresses great concern over the increasingly frequent hate speech in the online sphere. For this reason, the Belgrade Center for Human Rights within the project “Anonymous Hatred” launches available anti-hate speech protection mechanisms, such as complaints to the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality and Appeal to the Press Council.

On the basis of one of the complaints, the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality submitted a criminal complaint to the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade against an unknown perpetrator for the criminal offense referred to in Article 387, paragraph 4 of the Criminal Code – Racial and Other Discrimination. Also, based on an appeal filed by the Belgrade Center for Human Rights to the Press Council, after a consensual agreement, the B92 news portal removed discriminatory comments under the news divided on its Facebook page.

The Belgrade Center for Human Rights will continue to monitor and report cases of hate speech on the Internet. We also invite all citizens to report every hate speech they encounter through www.h8index.org
