Donor: Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Belgrade
Duration of the project: September 2006 – January 2007
The main result of the project is the production of the human rights booklet entirely adapted to the needs, knowledge and understanding of secondary schools students. The booklet offered to the students basic knowledge and understanding about human rights, their implementation and system of protection, thus contributing to the understanding and accepting of the universal values and tolerance. It certainly enhanced their knowledge of and motivation for the understanding of universal values, legal systems and international organizations. The booklet contributes to the elimination of prejudice, xenophobia, ethnic nationalism and stereotypes that are spread widely among the young generation. The Belgrade Centre has the impression that the book motivates the students to be more involved in the social changes and democratization of the country and particularly in their local communities. The booklet also serves the purpose of creating better atmosphere among school students and, in general, better climate and tolerance in schools and local communities. Besides from what was expected the booklet awoke great interest among the civic education teachers. They requested that the book should be part of the educational materials for teachers at the seminars organized by NGOs since it helped them to understand better human rights.
Booklet was used in all projects of the Belgrade Centre that are targeting high school students. The book has been distributed in more then 50 schools in Serbia. It is on the Web site of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights and many visitors are reading it.
