The Belgrade Centre for Human Rights condemns the recent attacks and threats of lynch against members of the Society for Spiritual Science “Sanatan” and their property in Beli Potok. The BCHR also condemns the irresponsible and sensationalist reports of the incidents by some print media. Such assaults and threats testify of xenophobia and non-acceptance of diversity. The Society has registered as an association of citizens and enjoys the constitutionally guaranteed right to freedom of association and freedom to choose its headquarters. The passivity and disregard of the competent authorities, above all the police, is especially concerning, as they ought to protect the rights of citizens to peaceful enjoyment of property and free association in accordance with the law.
The BCHR holds that intolerance and the tendency to explain everything by a conspiracy have led to a series of tragic developments in the region, whereby the danger the above conduct poses to society is all the greater. The right to differ pertains both to national and religious feelings. And to alternative religious communities. Citizens have to respect this right in their local communities.
